Right, so been away a few days and just checking I've not missed anything important.

We've signed a 22 year old keeper who has played 11 games in the last two seasons. This presumably means that we'll be signing two more keepers as Burnett has said he wants two experienced keepers?
Saunders has gone - hardly surprising as he hardly played
Wilkinson wants to leave, and this means he is now rubbish
Femi, who might get a Conf South team, has actually been signed by a team that finished above us
Money is being spent (or wasted) on a trip to Spain

Anything else?

Nothing like being positive !!

This time last year, many posters were saying we had an inexperienced manager, were favourites to go down, had a injury prone overweight forward etc etc etc.

There will be another keeper coming, if both our new keepers can dominate their box, distribute the ball we will be better.

As for Spain, if the gaffer feels he can get his squad sorted by early July, nothing wrong with team bonding, 2 sessions a day in the sun. Last pre-season didn't we have to rent Tottenham's old ground as M&B was useless.

I'm not sure what being positive, or what people said last year has got to do with anything.

I was simply checking on some stuff that had happened while I was a away.

Still, it's nice to see that there are still some people that seem to expect everyone to have the same views and not question anything.
I can't help but think that there are better uses of money than packing the players off to Spain for a bit.

I think those that run the club have been involved in football long enough including the manager to know whether a couple of days abroad would be worthwhile. We also sometimes forget that they have done amazingly well financially to sustain a club at this level for so long with our crowds.

I'm struggling with the concept of spending money on flights and accommodation that could be used on the playing budget, when the manager gave an interview not long a go saying that the squad last season was small due to the budget available.

For me, it doesn't quite add up. I don't see how training in another country is going to be beneficial above the cost.

It's possibly a way of "rewarding" the players for finishing in a healthy position last season. The club must have the funds (maybe a benefactor) to afford the outlay. I would hazard a guess that the outlay is far less then some people may think. Hopefully the players and manager will benefit from the trip in more ways then one (bet Glen Southem is envious)!

I saw the Spanish trip as a waste of money until I found out that it was being largely funded through sponsors that wouldn't otherwise be putting money into the club.

Its at a specialist football camp with no bars anywhere nearby.

Wayne and Warren both speak highly of the benefits of the trip so its Viva Espania.

I was just about to post that id be amazed if such a trip was coming out of regular club funds. Cheers for clarifying Simmo.

As someone else already said, and considering there's going to be a hell of a lot of new players, a trip like that should be great for team bonding.

Any idea if they will be playing any friendly matches there or purely training?

When did Simmo come back to the forums? Glad to have you back.

I must ask, did these sponsors say that there funds must be used for a bonding trip, or how did that work?

Also, why is everyone getting mad at the fact our senior team is making a trip abroad when our youth teams have been doing it for the past several years?

The team management spoke to people they personally knew who wouldnt normally put money into the club about sponsoring the trip. The management then approached the Board with a plan of a tour and the funding.

The training trip is only for a few nights but they are hopeful of a game against a local side. We need some sort of FA clearance to play a game if supporters are admitted for a price I believe. Therefore it's likely to be behind closed doors.

That obviously makes a bit of a difference if it's money that wouldn't have been available otherwise. Seems a shame that the sponsors couldn't be convinced to put in to something less specific, but hey ho.

Everyone, really? The youth teams go abroad to play in tournaments and get to experience playing against different teams and being in different situations to normal. I'm not sure that training in Spain is really that much different to training in the UK, other than it being a bit hotter.

What part of that didn't you understand?

Wayne & Warren knew these people PERSONALLY and other than agreeing to fund this trip they wouldn't normally have put money in to the club.

They are also probably choosing to go to Spain for the same reason many people choose to holiday abroad as opposed to going to some of the lovely places we have in this country. Other than the slightly hotter weather just the mere fact of being out of the country, change of scenery, different people, food etc. - endless list. Not to mention the facilities they will be training in I am sure is better than anything they could of got over here (and on the cheap and/or funded for)

Anyone reason to have a pop at the club, when you don't have the facts as well

Assuming that was all aimed at me, I understood all of what Simmo said thanks. I was just saying it was a shame that the sponsors couldn't be convinced to put money in for something less specific. Perhaps you could explain what is wrong with thinking that?

As Simmo has pointed out, they're going to a dedicated football facility, so I'm not sure how much different they're really going to get in Spain than in the UK or any other country for that.
They'll be mainly together, presumably eating food that is deemed to be best for footballers.

I'm beginning to wonder why I bothered registering for this forum, it's pretty clear that differing opinions just aren't wanted.
