National League Per Fixture Table

The Daggers are sitting is 5th place in the table. I like it!

However we have had two or three more fixtures than some clubs so I was curious what it would look like taking that into account. Google Sheets does a great job of maintaining formatting from a table to a spreadsheet so I was able to quickly cut and paste from the official NL website table and set up a formula to determine per fixture points. With that taken into account the Daggers are sitting in 9th place. I don't like that as much but knew this would drop us in the table.

I imagine someone could write a script to automate this but that is beyond my programming ability, which pretty much ended with BASIC in the 1980s. I will try and update weekly or maybe more often. At present I have reorganized some of the columns to place the more important (to me) columns on the left of the spreadsheet. I can do a much quicker cut and paste if anyone would like updates twice a week and not rearrange the columns, or I can give editing privileges to anyone that would like to help with this. I guess at some point late in the season this will work itself out with equal fixtures for all clubs.

I updated my National League table to account for the fixtures on 8 January 2022. The official website has not been updated after today's fixtures but the Wikipedia page for this year's National League has been updated so I cut-and-pasted from that website this time.

Daggers are 4th based on total points.
Daggers are 8th based on points per fixture.
The Daggers and today's opponent are two of three clubs that have played 23 fixtures and a couple of clubs have only played 19 fixtures. I added on the far right the points possible if a club won every fixture to match the fixture count of the Daggers. Taking that into account the Daggers are 10th in the table. Of course with the head-to-head competition inside the league not every club is going to win every fixture since a club needs a loss for another club to take the 3 points for the win.

I hope everyone enjoys the data analysis.

Interesting analysis there.

The game in hand argument is a odd one to be fair, depending on the club and the potential opponents, as well as the time left to play the games can as much of a negative then a positive.

It is sort of a worst case scenario in a way. And it truly would be worst case if both clubs walked away with 3 points from a fixture.

So we are somewhere between 4th place under the best circumstances and at worst 10th place.

Thanks for taking a look.

Here is an updated table after 15 January fixtures have finished.

Daggers sitting at 6th in points. 8th place in points per fixtures, and also 8th if all clubs played equal number of fixtures as the Daggers and won all of those fixtures, which is of course impossible. Altrincham is actually at 24 fixtures but they should be more worried about relegation than playoffs and promotion so I did not really factor this into anything.

We all know we are 7th in points but for those that care the Daggers are sitting 9th on a per fixture basis.

Notts County is sitting at 8th in points but has a few fixtures to get to our fixture count and that puts them at 5th on the per fixture method.

And dropped to 9th place in total points and points per fixture. The Daggers could be as low at 10th place it those with less fixtures played win those fixtures.

I am still updating. As of now the Daggers are in 10th place on a points per fixture basis. 9th overall in points. A few clubs have played 4 less fixtures than the Daggers so far.

I keep updating this, now just out of habit I guess for this year. Luckily it only takes a few minutes to cut and paste form a table on Wikipedia.

I did add a column for the remaining fixtures to see what is left and the level of the clubs that is left in the season.

Good reaction win last night, playing players in their better position like Rance who guarded the defence and Reynolds who played in the middle and not wide works who would have thought! Also having better players playing like Sagaf and Morais who never stops running instead of warming the bench.

But let’s not carried away here it’s Maidenhead who for 75% of the season are usually crap. Owners have come out the woodwork I see, probably hear nothing if we get beat by Yeovil and York.

I went ahead and updated for the fixtures on 5 March. Daggers are 10th place no matter how one looks at it. Total points or points per fixture.

11 fixtures left with 5 head of us in the table and 6 below us in the table

Sitting in 10th no matter on one looks at the table.

Dover is mathematically relegated at this point no matter how they finish the rest of the season.

Just done some maths - I make it, 20 points from 16 games against top half teams. and 35 points from 17 games against bottom half teams. 14 from 14 if you take out Southend.

Top Half Bottom Half
G 16 18
W 6 11
D 2 2
L 8 5
F 29 31
A 25 17
P 20 35
