Here's my thing with Benno.

I know, it might not be the best signing. I know he's old and it isn't thinking in the long term. But, what I need now as a Dagenham fan is something to cheer me up. Last year was crap, nobody was playing for the shirt. What better remedy to that is there than to bring back a club legend, just about my favourite ever daggers player, someone who's playing style really appeals to me as a fan, and seems like a good bloke and someone with the club right in his heart. As a short-term pick me up to inspire the team and the fans out of a funk, there is nobody better. No sighing we'll make this summer will excite me as much as Benno will. That's why we need him.

Who doesn't seriously believe that signing Benson early doors before the month is out might shift a few season tickets?

It's he a long term solution... No... It's that all we need next season... No

Jamie Cureton did that and we know what he is likely to cost, cant see us having both and to me another year of Jamie would be my preference.

Well I agree with all that.

But please don't tell me hes Young,as hungry and as motivated as he ever was,he just cant be.He might well be motivated to go into management and that might be a good thing.He''ll probably earn more as an accountant which I believe he is qualified as.I get the nostalgic thing but it is not a foundation for a young and hungry conference league club to build on if it wants future success.Of course introducing that feeling around the club is a good thing,but not starting players from 6-7 or even 10 years ago.

Hmmmm, I guess we'll have to agree to disagree somewhat. I do take your point and I'm enthused by the new signing as a hungry non-league player looking to take a chance, but I do genuinely think Benno will still have much of the motivation he had when he left. Maybe I'm being naive though. I guess we'll find out

On another point..... Cureton would be a valuable resource for JS to have in his coaching staff but I'd suggest now Curetons playing days are over. Look at the difference between last season and the one just gone. I'd suggest he is still a better footballer than Paul Benson but neither should be starting regularly now.

I'd doubt he'd earn more as an accountant. I'm pretty sure he wasn't qualified when he joined us, and even if he was the demand for accountants that haven't been accountants for over ten years isn't going to be great.

Young, hungry players need a few experienced heads around them. I'll give you two examples:
Scott Griffiths - young left back with lots of potential. Brought in with experienced players to learn from (Ashley Vickers, Lee Flynn) - became a very good player for us and made over 200 appearances
Jack Connors - young left back with lots of potential. Brought in with no real experience around him. Released having played around 50 games.

If Benno comes back, it won't be just to play. It will be to help young players as well. See Lee Flynn, Jon Taylor and Peter Gain.

Anybody who has half a brain knows football teams need a good mixture of youth and experience.

Imo great point with conners but that's gone way over most people heads here so wasted

I actually felt sorry for young Jack when he got the chop, one of the few players that showed any type of commitment to the cause. Imo always was a trier and gave 100%. Maybe he may well have benefited from more experienced pro's around him, but in all honesty I think he's found his level. Good luck to him though like I say one of few, who can actually hold his head up and say I did my best.

I'd heard the opposite about Connors - didn't want to roll up his sleeves and fight, hence being sent out on loan.
